For over twenty years, Billy McLaughlin astounded audiences around the world with his complex and rhythmic music. Then, an incurable neuromuscular disease rendered him unable to play his own music. In 2001, Billy was diagnosed with focal dystonia (FD). By 2002, Billy McLaughlin’s career was over.

The documentary film CHANGING KEYS follows Billy McLaughlin as he attempts the impossible of returning to the performing stage after re-learning his own music – note by note – with the opposite hand. According to Dr. Seth Pullman, Columbia University, Neurology Department, “It is estimated that approximately 1/200 musicians will be affected by focal dystonia in their lifetime.” Director Suzanne Jurva follows McLaughlin from his home in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, where he struggles to learn to play his own music again, to secret performances around the Twin Cities, to Detroit and his first time stepping on stage performing entirely left-handed and, then, triumphantly returning to his hometown crowd again to perform in front of a packed house.
